"It won't be easy but you never did like things that were easy. Denny we are so proud of you and hope that we will be able to measure up to you."
His mom
Quotables
Kid "Dad, this hurts!"
Dad "Oh gee! Let me see. It will be better in a few days!"
And it always was. Except for Cathryn's neck.
***
Dad "Did the medicine for your lip work?"
Kid "I think so, it hurt when I put it on my lip."
Dad "Well, if you put gravel on your lip, that would hurt too, but that doesn't mean it would work."
Kid "Oh."

And when you got in a car accident, bought a car on a whim, he hit his bald head on a sharp corner, or saw a huge bill, there's nothing like a nice, quiet, muttered "Shit!"
***
Kid: How much do you make, dad?
Dad: A penny a day!
(This is Susie) I remember finding a penny in the bathroom and thinking, "Wow, I made as much as my dad did today! That's not very much."

When complaining about something the other kid got to do, Dad would say, "You just worry about yourself!"
Our Asian Dad
Dad...
Went to Princeton and Columbia.
Will go to great lengths to save a cent (30 boxes of his favorite cereal in the cupboards because "They were on sale!" so he says excitedly).
He loves to take pictures and makes us say "cheese."
He wears bright colors (think fleece).
He can play lots on instruments really well.
He's pretty quiet/mellow.
He wants his kids to sit quietly.
He hates the messes pets make and pretty much hates pets.
He brought me (Susie) aside my freshman year of high school in the garage and pointed to the B on my report card and said, "How will you get into BYU with grades like these?"
He likes classical music and operas and can identify the instruments and composer. Thinks all other music is worthless (except musicals, of course).
"All things considered!" Although that's a smart person thing, not an Asian thing
He believes you should be the smartest person in your class.
He makes you memorize speeches, talks, poems, and scriptures.
He doesn't care how strange his hat is--he's all about practicality.
He hates paying for eating out or for food anywhere.
He thinks oranges make an appropriate gift.
Loved him a good fanny pack...until I introduced him to travel pouches that are practical AND hidden! That was a good twelve dollars spent!
